Love · Hate

𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐧𝐚 | 𝑱𝒆𝒐𝒏 𝑱𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒌𝒐𝒐𝒌

Love / Hate is the paired inscription on Jungkook Jeon's phalanges, a compact phrase embedded in the contrasting tattoo designs on his hands. Shelby Anderson Barnum notices it while examining those tattoos during a drive with him; although the words invite interpretation, the story withholds their personal meaning.

The inscription and its visual setting

The words appear across Jungkook's phalanges, one detail among the tattoos Shelby studies as he drives. On the back of his left hand, an oni with two small horns, two larger horns, and two fangs is accompanied by cherry blossoms in a calm, harmonious design. The back of his right hand bears the same kind of Japanese demon, but in a darker composition: a tantō is caught between its teeth, apparent blood marks the image, and roses with formidable thorns replace the blossoms. The paired words sit within this larger contrast, without the narrative assigning Love to one hand or Hate to the other.

Shelby's discovery

Shelby has seen Jungkook's tattoos before, but on this drive she studies them with particular attention. After he refuses Lexie's advances for the first time and leaves with Shelby, she continues to wonder why he is being so kind to her. In the car, with "Under the Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers playing, her gaze moves over his profile and then to the ink on his skin. The phrase becomes part of this close observation: she notices the words but does not yet know what they mean.

Private meaning and narrative role

Jungkook senses Shelby's curious attention and feels flattered that she is taking such an interest in his tattoos. The story specifies that only Namjoon and Jungkook's tattoo artist know the meaning behind all the ink; it does not disclose a separate explanation for Love / Hate. The phrase therefore remains a deliberate point of uncertainty rather than a decoded statement about Jungkook. Its placement beside sharply contrasting images gives the words visual force, while Shelby's unanswered curiosity links them to the gap between what can be seen on Jungkook's skin and what he has chosen to share.
